Biwali Bayles’ Early Life
Biwali Bayles was born in a small town in West Texas. She grew up in a loving family, where she learned the value of hard work and determination. For her this meant establishing herself as a talented artist before graduating from college and creating her own business.
Biwali Bayles was born in 1982. He grew up in Buffalo, NY. His parents were from Ghana, and they immigrated to the United States in the early 70s. His father was a tailor, and his mother owned a small grocery store. Biwali loved books and reading even when he was younger. In fact, his love of reading was so great that he would sometimes read while running. In addition to books, Biwali also enjoyed art. He used to draw and paint on everything that could be decorated with a paint brush. He drew comic strips, but most of all he drew cartoons. Biwali graduated from high school in 1992. He graduated early because he was determined to become a successful artist like his favorite cartoonist – Charles Schulz Biwali enrolled in the nearby University at Buffalo, where he studied art. He became so skilled at drawing cartoons that he was able to earn extra money by doing free drawings of the school’s sports teams. Biwali was always a very busy artist. When he wasn’t in school, or hanging out with friends, he would be sketching and drawing cartoons for his local daily newspaper. One of his favorite subjects were children because they seemed to get on his nerves; so many of his friends were little babies or toddlers! Biwali didn’t just draw stick figures, he was a master of movement, facial expressions and energy. One of his most famous cartoons showed two young girls playing on the playground. The one in the middle had her face buried in her hands and was crying. The other girl looked down from above with an expression that said “How can I help?”At first Biwali didn’t really know what he wanted to do for a career. He took night classes at the Art Institute of Buffalo and studied art history and architecture. When his family moved to New York City in 1963, he took up cartooning full time. His work was published in the New Yorker and Newsweek. He worked on this book with his long-time colleague Ian Miller of the University of Arizona Press, who was highly praised for his ability to connect history and art. Miller helped me become familiar with Biwali’s work so that I would better understand how he used it to teach as well as to entertain.”
